Bangkok to Kanchanaburi Train: Stations & Death Railway
The regular Bangkok to Kanchanaburi train journey starts at Thonburi station on the west side of the Chao Phraya River. It serves Kanchanaburi on the route toward Nam Tok, allowing you to combine ordinary rail travel with a visit to the River Kwai area. Check the current timetable before deciding how far to travel and whether to return the same day.
Which Bangkok station should you use?
For the regular local service, plan your transfer to Thonburi railway station. Do not automatically head to Krung Thep Aphiwat or Hua Lamphong because another intercity journey used one of those stations. Organised excursion trains can use a different departure point and a separate reservation arrangement; the excursion notice or ticket determines where to go.
Save the station’s full name and map location before leaving your accommodation. Road traffic and a river crossing can make the transfer longer than the straight-line distance suggests. Arrive with enough time to find the ticket counter and confirm the train’s stopping pattern.
Kanchanaburi, the bridge or Nam Tok?

These stops are not interchangeable. A ticket only to Kanchanaburi does not describe the whole ride to Nam Tok. Decide whether the main purpose is time in town, a bridge visit or the longer railway journey, then plan the correct destination and return service.
Local tickets and excursion bookings
Regular local trains and special tourist excursions are different products. Local journeys may require purchase at the station and may not appear in an online booking search. An empty result from an independent booking site is not proof that the line has no service. Confirm ordinary-train times and ticket arrangements with SRT or the station.
For an excursion, check the operating date, departure station, included stops and reservation requirements in the current notice. Do not assume that a weekend tour timetable also applies to the regular service. Confirm the applicable fare at purchase rather than relying on a price copied from an old guide.
What the journey is like
Expect local-train travel rather than an overnight sleeper experience. Confirm the accommodation on your specific service; do not buy a trip on the assumption that it includes air-conditioning or a reserved seat. Bring drinking water, a light bag and what you need for several hours away from your hotel.
The term “Death Railway” refers to the railway’s wartime history. Treat the museums, cemeteries and memorials as places of remembrance. Observe local access rules around the bridge and tracks, and use designated places to watch or photograph trains.
Can you do it as a day trip?
A day trip needs a workable return departure as well as an outbound train. Travelling all the way to Nam Tok leaves a different sightseeing window from getting off in Kanchanaburi. Write down the return train, the boarding station and an alternative road option before departing Bangkok.
If you want to visit several historical sites or travel beyond the town, staying overnight can reduce the pressure of a tight return connection. Do not rely on a fixed “last train” quoted without a date: check the operating timetable and any disruption notice for the day you travel.
