Bangkok to Koh Tao by Train: Chumphon & Ferry Guide

Koh Tao has no railway connection. A Bangkok to Koh Tao journey by train combines rail to the mainland, a transfer to a ferry pier and a sea crossing. Chumphon is a commonly used rail gateway. Compare the entire connection before choosing a train, rather than booking a sleeper first and hoping a ferry fits its arrival.

The journey via Chumphon

1. Take a train from the specified Bangkok station to Chumphon Railway Station.
2. Use the confirmed road transfer from the station or another stated pickup point to the ferry pier.
3. Check in for the ferry to Koh Tao and confirm the island arrival pier.
4. Arrange the final ride to your accommodation or dive centre.

Which train should you choose?

If you take an overnight train, make the ferry booking for the arrival date, not the evening you leave Bangkok. Check the precise Bangkok terminal on the train ticket. Keep your train number handy so the transfer operator can assess the proposed connection.

Station transfer and ferry check-in

Chumphon railway station is inland. Allow time to leave the train, locate the pickup and travel to the pier before the ferry check-in deadline. Do not use the train’s scheduled arrival and ferry’s departure time as if they occurred at the same place.

Ask how delays are handled. A combined road-and-ferry ticket may cover those two stages while leaving the train separately booked. A sales bundle is not proof that the ferry will wait or that a missed sailing will be rebooked without charge. Save the relevant conditions and operator contact details.

What about travelling via Surat Thani?

Surat Thani is another mainland gateway with island connections. Compare the available route, any island stops, station pickup and overall journey time. It may fit a wider Southern Thailand itinerary, but it is not automatically interchangeable with the Chumphon route.

Choose based on the actual combination of trains and ferries for your dates. If you are also visiting Koh Samui or Koh Phangan, compare the island sequence before buying separate legs. Check each ferry’s final destination and whether a change of boat is required.

Budget and arrival planning

Add the train, booking charges, station-to-pier transfer, ferry and local transport on Koh Tao. Review luggage rules with the ferry and road operators, especially when travelling with diving equipment or unusually large bags. Treat online example prices as planning context, not a guaranteed total.

Weather can change ferry operations. Keep some flexibility before a time-sensitive island activity and check the operator’s notices close to departure. For the return journey, leave a useful margin between the mainland ferry arrival, road transfer and Bangkok-bound train. Confirm the pickup and check-in instructions again for that direction.
